Joseph Kosinski’s “F1” was released this past June, and was met with high praise. This movie follows Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt), a former Formula One driver, who spun-out during a big race, causing his career to be cut short. His former teammate, who now runs his own team, desperately reaches out for help racing in order to save his team from being sold by its investors. Paired with ambitious rookie Jonathan Pearce (Damson Idris), they must take home one Grand Prix to keep the team alive.
After two viewings, I can safely say that it is my favorite movie to be released in 2025. The first thing you notice when watching is the chemistry between the two leads. Pitt plays a “has-been”, who wants to prove he’s still got it by using the methods he was brought up on. While Idris, is an arrogant hotshot who thinks he already knows it all. Watching the two butt heads throughout the movie, while also learning a few things from one another is what stands out to me.
Another highlight of the movie is the cinematography and camera work. The races were shot beautifully, and were so action-packed that whether you have an interest in racing or not, your eyes will be locked on the screen. I first watched this in theaters, and the crisp shots and electric energy provided a theater experience to remember.
F1 may be classified as a “sports/action” movie, but it definitely doesn’t fall short on comedy, with funny side characters and sharp one liners throughout. There is also a romance aspect that adds charm to the characters, without feeling too intrusive on the main plot. The pacing was outstanding; two and a half hours felt like just one and they didn’t leave any questions to be answered. Overall, top-notch performances, thrilling action sequences, and a satisfying conclusion make F1 a must watch film.
