Tate McRae’s album, So Close To What, was released on February 21, 2025. This album is a very vibrant, emotionally charged album that showcases her strongest vocals and most confident songwriting yet. So Close To What is Tate McRae’s third studio album
“Miss Possessive” is a song that talks about a lot of possessiveness. Tate sings that other people better keep their hands off of her man. She gets protective towards him and has a lot of jealousy. Tate wants the man all to herself. All she wants is her man to either look up at the ceiling, down at the floor, anywhere that is not looking at another girl because she will get jealous over it.
“2 Hands” is about physical intimacy, all she wants is for the person to focus more on her and keep his hands on her instead of driving. She knows she does not need a person to be telling her that they love her and giving her compliments and saying she’s the number one and everyone else is second place. She also does not care about any of those words. She knows it doesn’t mean much to her. Rather than talking, all she wants is to be physical with him. She doesn’t care what he wears, what he buys for her or anything really because she just thinks it’s useless and meaningless because she’s seen something good turn into bad.
“Revolving Door” is a metaphor to describe her relationship with this person. It’s an on and off relationship and she keeps going back to him like a revolving door. Saying she shouldn’t want him but it makes her want him more. She changes her mind so much on him that she isn’t even able to define what the relationship is. She notices that she is supposed to be on stage working but all she needs is a minute because all she thinks about is him. Her and this man had a night out in Boston. That is what she thinks about so much and it hurts her to think about it. She knows she’s an adult and she’s supposed to be an adult while handling this confusing relationship but all she really needs is a minute and some space to process her emotions.
“Bloodonmyhands” (feat. Flo Milli) is about guilt and responsibility in a relationship. “ Blood on my hands” is about consequences and how she handles it.
Dear god talks on how she prays where her hands are on her chest and her knees are on the carpet praying, hoping she can get every memory out of her brain from her relationship. All she wants is to erase his name from her head by praying. She prays nonstop and hopes God is listening to her. She would give up everything in her life to have him out of her life and completely erased from her brain.
“Purple Lace Bra” talks about how Tate Mcrae has been doing her stuff like singing and crying and no one notices. However, she wonders if her Purple lace bra catches anyone’s attention and it does seem like it. After getting someone’s attention she wonders if they would be physical or not with her and let out all her inner thoughts out around him. She tries to be physical around him and try to get his attention all because she is in a purple lace bra but in reality people only see her as a sexual person when all she wants is someone to hear her out.
Sports car says she wants to get physical with a man in a sports car or anywhere. She knows the man does not have a wife but he does have a sports car. They are in the car with blue street lights and her hazel eyes she gets butterflies from him.
Signs is about how Tate is trying to show a guy all these signs that she wants him but instead she is kind of pushing him away. There are a ton of mixed feelings in this relationship, saying one thing and another but can be turned into something completely different.
“I Know Love” (feat. The Kid LAROI) is a song where Tate McRae and her now ex boyfriend The Kid LAROI made a song together where they talk about how they know love. They know how it goes with each other, they know how it hits when it comes to just them.
“Like I Do” talks about jealousy and how someone wants to be like her and do what she does, how someone wants her man just by looking at them. There is a lot of tension throughout the song, where she thinks someone wants to know her but in reality just wants to do what she does.
“It’s Ok I’m Ok” is about ending a relationship and acting like everything is fine once the man leaves to go to a new person, however, the new girl says that he’s so perfect, but Tate is wondering what version because he is two-faced. Tate says to her to take him because he is all hers now and that she’s okay with it.
“No I’m Not In Love” is about her saying she’s not in love, people might misread her actions. She doesn’t get bothered when her man looks up to his exes, she tells everyone that she is not in love, especially her friends. She might be scared to be in love again or she might not know what real love feels like.
“Means I Care” shows a complicated way on how she is affectionate to someone, she shows in ways that are complicated. All she does is just care though. When she says “cut you off” or “go ghost” it’s a way to just show that she actually cares.
“Greenlight” is about the tension of wanting to move on but she’s stuck. She waits for the greenlight. She says she can’t let go nor can she go at a green light. She still waits at the greenlight
“Nostalgia” is about how she had so much nostalgia throughout the past years, she looks back on her past, dreams and what has come true or not. She feels like she’s so close to so many things. How all she feels so much nostalgia from the past.
“Siren Sounds” (bonus) talks about how Tate and a man have ended a relationship a year ago but also she tells him to come over but she knows it’s bound to end. She knows the relationship is too toxic to continue. She pretends like they are in a burning house. Everyone does tell them to get out of the burning house, meaning to get out of the toxic relationship. They don’t listen to anyone whatsoever. all they do is dance to the siren sounds and let the flames around them be. She would rather be with him in a burning house than actually getting out and saving herself from the toxic relationship.
My overall opinion about this album is phenomenal, every lyric just describes me in certain ways. I can relate to some of the songs she has written throughout the years.
