Potholes are a problem almost every Rhode Island driver knows well. Parents, teachers, students, and anyone making their way to Toll Gate know they are almost impossible to avoid. The potholes make rough road conditions and can make daily traveling hard, unsafe, and stressful.
Potholes usually form after winter weather weakens the pavement. Snow, ice, rain, and freezing temperatures cause cracks in the road, and over time those cracks become holes. In a state like Rhode Island, where roads already deal with a lot of wear and tear, potholes can show up quickly and stay around for a long time. According to transportation data, thousands of potholes are reported every year in the state, showing just how common and serious the issue is.
Road concerns have also become a bigger conversation across the state. With issues in well known places like the Mount Hope bridge, many people in the state have become more aware of the condition of the roads and bridges they rely on everyday. While that may seem far from Toll Gate, it reflects a larger issue that affects communities all over Rhode Island.
At Toll Gate, this problem has felt especially familiar near the main entrance of the school by Centerville Road. Students, staff, and families driving in and out of that area had to deal with potholes that made an already busy part of getting to the building even more frustrating, sometimes finding themselves driving near the middle of the road just to avoid them. Mackenzie said “When I hit the potholes coming into school it felt like my tire was about to pop, and sounded horrible”.
Hitting a pothole can cause real damage to a car, including tire punctures, bent rims, and suspension issues. Repairs cost hundreds of dollars, something many students and families cannot easily afford. Despite this, road repairs are often delayed, leaving drivers to deal with the consequences.
Fortunately, those potholes were finally fixed on Friday, March 27, that doesn’t mean the problem is solved. Similar issues continue to exist across the state, and without consistent maintenance, they will keep coming back.. Although it was a small repair, it made a noticeable difference for the people who use that entrance every day. Local officials and road crews need to prioritize road repairs, especially in high traffic areas like schools and highways. Students and families can also play a role by reporting potholes and bringing attention to unsafe road conditions. If nothing is done , the problem will only continue to grow.
Potholes may seem like a small issue, but they affect the daily routines of many drivers and reflect a bigger problem with Rhode Island roads. For the Toll Gate community it is a reminder that road problems students and anyone driving see every day are worth paying attention too.
