This Saturday on June 8th, the Gaspee Day Parade took place in Pawtuxet Village. It was a wonderful day with many ceremonial floats and events that took part in the parade. Gaspee Day is a historical parade celebrating the burning of the HMS Gaspee in 1772 in defiance against the British. Since 1965, the Gaspee Day Parade has taken place to remember this important event in Rhode Island’s history. The day commences with a 5k run with runners from all over Rhode Island. Anyone who wants to participate in this run is able to do so. After the run, there is a period in which those who took part in it can settle in and await the parade’s commencement. The parade begins and many floats from different organizations and schools drive down waving to all of the spectators. There are cannons being set off throughout the parade and afterwards many different bands-some from schools-play patriotic songs and march down. Our very own Toll Gate Band took place in this procession and played very well. Overall the Gaspee Parade is a day to remember our history and bring all of Rhode Island together in patriotic unity. An amazing and historical parade combined with a fun and enjoyable day.
