CCRI (Community College of Rhode Island) is offering a high school enrichment program for juniors and seniors, granting the opportunity to take classes after school and earn college credits, while the school district pays for it.
The program offers the chance to take two classes a semester. However, I would recommend taking one. In my own experience, it can be a pretty large workload.
The opportunity to take CCRI classes is not talked about often, and because of that, it’s overlooked, and many students lose out on this fantastic chance to get a leg up on many other college applicants. For CTC (Career Technical Center) students, this is a particularly valuable opportunity, as it gives them the chance to earn language credits needed to apply to most colleges. The only other option is to leave CTC for a period, possibly missing out on internship opportunities.
Mrs. Wilkinson, department head of the Guidance department, had this to say: “I do think it’s a great opportunity; however, students need to know the amount of work expected before fully diving into this opportunity.”
She is right. Depending on the course you’re taking, there is a lot of work you are expected to complete independently. It can get to be overwhelming if you’re not on top of it. However, I still believe it is an extremely worthwhile opportunity that too often goes overlooked or is written off as too hard or not necessary when, in reality. It grants students an opportunity to greatly improve their chances of getting into colleges and universities that they otherwise would not qualify for, simply because they didn’t take the right classes in high school.
