In January, senior Jack Colvin scored 15 points with 5 threes to propel Toll Gate Basketball’s upset over Pilgrim 50-47. On Saturday, Colvin propelled the Titan baseball team from the bump and the plate rather than the three-point line. Colvin gave up only 2 earned runs with 2 strikeouts in 5.2 IP, adding 2 hits and an RBI from the plate in Toll Gate’s 8-7 win over the Division 1 Patriots.
Pilgrim threw the first punch at Warwick Veterans middle school, scoring two runs in the top of the first. Toll Gate was quick to respond in the bottom half of the inning, doubling Pilgrim’s tally and leading by two heading to the 2nd inning. Pilgrim took the lead with three runs scored in the 3rd, but Toll Gate scored one run in 4 consecutive innings to put the game barely out of reach. Pilgrim rallied with two runs in the top of the 6th, but Jonah Lafauci’s game saving catch with one on and one out in the seventh all but sealed the game. LaFauci said he treated it like any other flyball, “just good reaction, got there in time, and caught the ball.”
At the plate, the Titans were propelled by shortstop Connor Salzillo, who was 2-3 with 3 runs and 1 RBI. “Had to put the ball in play, make something happen, that was my approach all day, that’s what everybody did.” Salzillo and the team’s simple approach led to 10 hits that led to the 8-7 victory to the Titans. Neither team played the best brand of defensive baseball, with each club committing three errors, but the Titans were able to respond better than the Patriots.
The Titans improve to 3-12 with the win, and look to sneak into the D2 playoffs.
Update: Titans made the playoffs as the 11th seed and lost to West Warwick in the preliminary round 6-0.
Following a frustrating start to their 2025 season, the Toll Gate baseball team was looking to build on their win against Rogers. The Titans came to play and won a back and forth game 8-7 against the Division 2 Pilgrim Patriots.
