For the first time since 2019, the Toll Gate boys track team brought some hardware for “The Bridge to the Past” as they secured 2nd Place in the Dwyer Division. The Titans were regular season co-division champions along with Portsmouth and La Salle following a 9-1 season, matching their record in the Suburban Division last season. This year, in a new division, the team was able to capture the elusive Runner-Up plaque.
The Titans started their season with a pair of wins against Central and Moses Brown, with a well-rounded performance as the Titans scored in every event. Portsmouth handed the Titans their lone loss in the 2nd dual meet, but not before the Titans dispatched Burillville and Johnston handily. In the 3rd dual meet, the Titans beat up on La Salle’s skeleton crew (most of the team competed at the Hispanic Games in New York), and blew out North Providence and Westerly. In their final dual meet, the Titans beat Lincoln and Woonsocket 64-36 and 64-33 respectively, notching the regular season title.
The Lions of Lincoln were the Titans’ closest foe for 2nd Place in the Division Championships, with La Salle scoring 250 points, Toll Gate at 61 points, and Lincoln at 54 points. Portsmouth was 4th with 40 points. The 4x800m and 4x400m relay teams both took home 2nd place, while the 4x200m relay came in 4th. In the individual events, Joshua Maynard won the 3000m and placed 5th in the 1000m, and John Maynard placed 3rd in the 1500m. Dariel Guzman placed 7th in the 55m Hurdles. Kevin Barker scored in two individual events, placing 4th in the High Jump, 3rd in the Long Jump.
Following the division championships, the Titans’ 4×800 relay teams and the throwers competed at the East Coast Invitational. Junior Vanessa Jones, who is currently top 5 in the nation, won the weight throw and set a new PR. Senior Brendan Muholland also medalled, in the shot put. Both the boys and girls relay teams medaled and received All-East Coast Honors.
Championship season is now in full swing, as the RITCA Invitational takes place on Saturday 1/25, the Class Meet on 2/1, and the State Meet on 2/15.
